I’m afraid that I never did find out what this particular tradition signified. One of Davinder’s aunts started carrying this pot with lit oil lamps on her head from across the street. Different women took turns walking into to the front of the room, then all the rest of the women took a turn. I was surprised when I was called up for a turn as well.
After the ceremony was over, we had dinner at about 10pm. The food was very tasty, but we were very cautious about what we ate—no raw fruits or vegetables as they might have been rinsed in unsafe water, only bottled water and lots of liquor to kill any bad germs. Although our stomachs always felt on the verge of falling off the edge of a cliff, we were very fortunate not to get Delhi Belly.
