While wandering around Verona, we happened past the Juliet Club. In the 1930s, an Italian gentleman took it upon himself to start responding to the many letters addressed to “Juliet, Verona.” Despite all of the electronic methods of communication now available, thousands of the lovelorn still send handwritten letters to Juliet.
When we stopped by, these three college students were volunteering as “secretaries” to respond to the letters. Amazingly, each of the 6,000 letters per year is read, translated and answered and then kept in a unique archive that contains thousands of love stories. Very touching indeed!
