In late January, after a visit to the US Consulate in Amsterdam to renew my passport, I enjoyed visiting three museums. The first was the Stedelijk, the modern and contemporary art museum, where I was completely fascinated with the special exhibit:
The Factory by Carlos Amorales. One of Mexico’s most important contemporary artists, this exhibit was an overview of his work from the 1990s, when he studied in Amsterdam, to the present day.
The most impressive and memorable work was Black Cloud, consisting of thousands of black paper moths. This concept apparently came to Amorales in a dream and when he woke up he covered his studio in paper moths. They have since followed him and “flown” into various galleries, museums and churches around the globe, becoming an entirely different immersive work of art at each location.
It’s cool when different types of art converge such as paper moths along with a view of old architecture.
Amorales worked in a wide variety of materials, including neon lights in this piece called Peep Show.
Working together with the Textile Lab in Tilburg, that Jimmy and I visited in both February 2019 and 2020, he made a new installation specifically for this exhibit. In
Orgy of Narcissus, Amorales examines the phenomenon of the Internet meme with overlapping streams of depictions of the same figure in neon above captured in an endless narcissistic orgy.
He doesn’t do anything on a small scale as there were 60 sections of these textiles woven from silk thread.
