In Search of a Whale’s Tale...

On April 3, we went on Veronica’s first outing since her return. It was a long journey, so we brought Kati’s pad along so she could sit on seats on the trains.

This tram made us smile with cows on its doors and flowers all over.

Our first stop was the far end of the De Akker metro station in Spijkenisse, south of Rotterdam, to see the Whale Tails sculpture placed there in 2002.

Incredibly, the far side tail made global news on November 1, 2020, when it caught a runaway metro train. Luckily no one was hurt. Click here to learn more and see the dramatic photos of the metro car dangling over the end of the tracks.

Seeing with our own eyes just how far the end of the tracks were from the station made the entire event even more mind-boggling. We can only assume that this long extra stretch of track was installed in the hopes of a major expansion of the line in the distant future. 

Next we went in search for a geocache, which was pretty easy for Veronica to find hidden in the top of a minibieb. This was the first free library that we’d ever seen that had a big sign in the window that it only accepted books in Dutch.
