Since I was out and about early, I figured it was time to head back to the Tsukiji Fish Market so I could finally get inside the wholesale section. It was massive!
Before entering, I was given a map along with a warning to pay attention where I walked as this was not a tourist attraction but rather the world’s largest wholesale fish and seafood market. According to the map, visitors were only allowed inside a fairly small section; can only imagine what must go on in the rest of the building that isn’t fit for tourists’ eyes.
In addition to bikes in the building, there were lots of forklifts to dodge.
Most of the work happens between 3 ̶ 8 a.m., long before the market opens to the public. There were still lots of workers around, however, so I was hesitant to take too many photos but managed to sneak a few.
Most of the fish were in Styrofoam containers with some already dead...
...and others still swimming around.
There were mountains of Styrofoam outside the building ̶ not exactly environmentally friendly. Apparently the market will be moving next year in anticipation of Tokyo hosting the 2020 Olympics.
