C2C Day 1: Heading Towards the Trailhead...

Here’s a basic map to show roughly where we’d be going over the next 16 days. Although it is not a national trail, a key reason that the Coast-2-Coast is one of the most popular long distance trails in England is because it passes through three national parks.
Here is a sample of the hand-drawn maps that would be guiding us along the way, backed up with waypoints on Kent’s GPS and ordinance maps downloaded on Jimmy’s phone. Wainwright’s original book also featured hand-drawn maps, but the Coast to Coast Path guidebook has become the C2C Bible because the maps are much easier to read and are updated regularly.
After the first of many hearty breakfasts we’d enjoy over the 2+ weeks, we set off around 9 a.m. to walk the 1/2 mile to the shore. The skies were clear, which made for a wonderful way to start our adventure.
Before heading to the trailhead, we had a tradition to abide by—we each had to pick up three pebbles off the beach, one to threw into the Irish Sea, one to carry across England to throw into the North Sea, and one to keep as a souvenir.
Overall, we were pretty forgetful about getting group photos, but luckily someone walked up at the perfect moment to capture this shot just before we set off up the hill in the background.
