C2C Day 1: Up, Up, Up...

We saw an incredible variety of stiles (steps, ladders or narrow gaps providing passage through or over a fence or wall) on our trek. Stiles are often required due to “rights of way” laws in the UK, but there’s no standard design.
This ladder on that first day was by far the highest stile we climbed.
Here we are after our sweaty climb up Dent Hill at 1,155 feet (353 meters), our first fell (a word used in Northern England for barren mountains above the tree line) and the highest point for that day.
From here we saw our last glimpses of the Irish Sea.
After having to stop several times to catch my breath as I hiked up, I was incredibly impressed as we spotted a runner heading our way.
Jimmy is standing on the first and largest cairn (stack of stones have been used since ancient times as trail markers) we came across.
