Flowers, Flowers, Everywhere...

We had purposely concentrated on visiting greenhouses growing food in light of Veronica’s decision to concentrate on food security and sustainable agriculture for her Master’s Degree, but decided to pay a last minute visit to Jac Oudrijk Gerbera. It was so late in the day that they had already stopped demonstrating their packaging process...

...but we were still able to enter their massive greenhouse to see their lovely flowers, which are in the daisy family.

It was surprising to learn that they grow 61 varieties! It was also nice to learn that the greenhouse is covered in 1,200 solar panels.

Although the vehicles holding the flowers are automated, the picking process must still be done by hand.

It’s events like these that help to remind us what a special country the Netherlands is.
