Ameyayokocho...

Across from Ueno Station, we wandered into the Ameyayokocho open-air market area. This area definitely reminded me more of other parts of Asia (although it's been 21 years since my last visit) than anywhere else that I've seen in Tokyo so far.

The name apparently comes from the shops in the area that started selling black market US goods after World War II.

There were lots of stores selling athletic clothes, shoes and electronics.

This was the largest snack shop I've ever seen. I bought several kinds of seaweed snacks, including some cookies that taste like fortune cookies but with seaweed wrapped around. There was an entire row of dried fish snacks, but haven't had the nerve to try any yet.

There were also a few food stalls, including this one selling fish heads.
