According to Wikipedia: By hanging flags in high places, the blessings depicted on the flags will be carried to all beings. As wind passes over the surface of the flags, the air is purified and sanctified by the mantras. The prayers of a flag become a permanent part of the universe as the images fade from exposure to the elements.
Along the way there were signs specifying the elevation and distance to the next villages.
This was an incredibly long stretch of steps leading downhill along the largest set of mani stones that we encountered.
Clearly we couldn’t pass along the left of these mani stones carved into the hillside while heading downhill...
...but we could of the large boulder serving as a mani stone seen to the left.
Sadly, I was almost as slow going downhill than I was going uphill.
Of course, stopping to take photos made me even slower.
