Sculptures and More Views...

We finished the day with a stop at the National Gallery of Australia. First we took a walk along Lake Burley where we saw the National Carillon, bell tower, in the distance.

It was too late to visit the museum, but we visited the sculpture garden. Angel of the North, by Antony Gormley in 1996, is a 1:10 model of a 20-ton figure that towers over a freeway in England. The materials are the same, hinting at centuries of coal mining and England’s industrial past.

The most haunting artwork was Heads from the North by Dadang Christanto in 2004. The 66 bronze heads are a memorial to victims of violence following an unsuccessful military coup in 1965 in Indonesia. The artist was only eight when his father was one of the many who disappeared.

I liked the shiny mirrors of Cones by Bert Flugelman in 1982.
